A short take on what people want when they support Donald Trump

So you like Donald Trump.

What does that say about you? Is there any one thing in particular that can be predicted about you based on your support?

Yes, but we'll get to that in a minute. First I'd like you to answer four questions posed by pollster Matthew MacWilliams in Politico that will tell us an awful lot.

The questions are about child rearing.

1. Is it more important for your child to be respectful or independent?

2. Is it better for your child to be obedient or self-reliant?

3. Do you want your child to be well-behaved or considerate?

4. How about well-mannered or curious?

You may have noted that the choices are not really direct opposites. In fact, in each of the four choices you could say that both options are good. That's not the point. The point is choosing which of the options you would want for your child if you could only have one.

America's savior?
Well, if you chose the first option in all four questions, it's a pretty fair bet you're voting for Trump. It's also a pretty fair bet you're a Republican. If you want your children to be respectful, obedient, well-behaved and well-mannered at the expense of things like independence and self-reliance, you have strong tendencies toward authoritarianism.

In fact, except for maybe race, the No. 1 thing Trump supporters have in common is authoritarianism.

They see a world spinning out of control and they want to elect a strong leader to make things better.

There's a great irony in this. Folks on the conservative side of the spectrum tend to be anti-government, particularly when it comes to education. It would seem that much of their authoritarian feelings involve how other people should be controlled.

Of course that's pretty much the way most people are.

I'm OK, you're not OK.
